5 things about your menstrual cycle you might not know

Though individual menstrual cycle patterns vary from woman to woman, the average cycle length is 28 days. A cycle is usually considered healthy when it is between 21 and 35 days long.

We can view our menstrual cycle as having four seasons. Phase 1 can be seen as Winter - the period phase. Phase 2 as Spring - the follicular phase. Phase 3 as Summer - the ovulatory phase. Phase 4 as Autumn - the luteal phase.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones, so changes in your hormones affect your cycle. Our diet/the foods we eat can have an impact on our ovary health and our hormones, which can in turn affect our menstrual health. A regular menstrual cycle is a sign of good health and hormonal balance.

Ovarian follicles are small sacks filled with fluid that are found inside a woman's ovaries. They secrete hormones that influence the stages of the menstrual cycle. Women begin puberty with about 300,000 to 400,000 of them, each has the potential to release an egg for fertilisation.

If you are on any kind of hormone or contraception such as the pill, affects your natural menstrual cycle. It shuts down the natural hormonal fluctuations that happen in our bodies. You don't have a follicular phase and ovulation doesn't happen.
