This is not your average yoga class - this is 75 minutes of a combination of techniques I have spent years studying lifted from a more traditional yoga practice as well as Chinese Medicine.

What is yin yoga?

While “yang” yoga focuses on your muscles, yin yoga targets your deep connective tissues, like your fascia, ligaments, joints, and bones. It’s slower and more meditative, giving you space to turn inward and tune into both your mind and the physical sensations of your body. Because you’re holding poses for a longer period of time than you would in other traditional types of yoga, yin yoga helps you stretch and lengthen those rarely-used tissues while also teaching you how to breathe through discomfort and sit with your thoughts.

The practice of yin yoga is based on ancient Chinese philosophies and Taoist principles which believe there are pathways of Qi (energy) that run through our bodies. By stretching and deepening into poses, we’re opening up any blockages and releasing that energy to flow freely.

What is myofascial release?

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. Myofascia is the dense tough tissue that surrounds your muscles and bones and is known as “the tissue of movement.” It consists of three layers: the superficial fascia, the deep fascia and the subserous fascia. Fascia is one of three types of dense connective tissue (the others being ligaments and tendons), and extends from head to toe.

Vigorous workouts and inflammation cause muscle stress which can result in “trigger points” of myofascial pain. Myofascial release targets those rigger points to relax them, helping to stretch them out and relieve pain. Myofascial release helps prevent injuries, rids your muscles of tightness and knots, alleviates stress, increases blood flow and flexibility, and aids in recovery from workouts.

What is acupressure?

Acupressure finds its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupressure is essentially a method of sending a signal to the body to “turn on” its own self-healing or regulatory mechanisms. Normally, Qi (vital energy) circulates through natural pathways in the body called meridians. Blockage of this flow or an imbalance in Yin and Yang can cause illness and pain. Acupressure helps to correct functional imbalances and restore the flow thus returning the body to a more natural state of well-being. Acupressure is an effective form of stimulation used to help relax the muscles. If done regularly, this method of self-massage can sustain improvement and minimize recurrence of symptoms.

Who is this course for?

Many of us live fast-paced, active lives, whether we’re going for a run, powering through several Zoom meetings, or sweating it out on our bike. Yin yoga is the perfect balance to those intense exercises, providing a slower, more meditative counterpart to help you round out your workouts.

Yin yoga is also for anyone who is dealing with injuries or a chronic condition like arthritis or osteoporosis as this style in particular is a more restorative practice than other forms of exercise. Yin can also be a great starting point for anyone interested in meditation as it has such an internal focus.

To access this course you'll need two tennis balls or two myofascial release balls (purchasable online) as well as props that you like to be comfortable - cushions, blankets, a yoga mat (optional).

Meet your yoga teacher and guide for your course, Dr. Sally Eccleston

Hi, I’m Sally, I am a yoga teacher, a psychologist and an intuitive coach. I specialise in women’s health and trauma informed practice. Since experiencing my first yoga class 9 years ago, and having studied psychology for 14 years , I have made it my life mission to empower others to continually shift, learn, and evolve emotionally, physically, & spiritually. Having shifted through periods of stress, anxiety, burn-out and depression, I am now committed to a daily practice of holistic self-care and I love sharing these practices with others. I teach others how to awaken the connection to their body and how to be more aware of their body’s intelligence.

It is so rewarding for me to create a community of people which is inclusive and supportive for people to play, relax and connect with themselves and others. I truly believe in the magic of being compassionate and loving with ourselves and the world around us.

More than anything, I help individuals move from a state of disconnection and stress to having overall positive wellbeing and improved mind and body connection. I do this by combining science and spirituality, a unique blend of western psychology and eastern philosophy. It’s great to have you here!
